Aleksandër Moisiu University or officially Aleksandër Moisiu University of Durrës (Albanian: Universiteti "Aleksandër Moisiu" Durrës; short: UAMD) is the newest public academic institution of the Republic of Albania. The University is located in the ancient city of Durrës and has a branch in Peshkopi. It was inaugurated in 2006 and is using the American system of education, unlike the rest of the public universities in the country. More than 1,300 students started classes as of October 2, 2006. University of Durrës took its name from Austrian-Italian actor Aleksandër Moisiu, who was of Albanian descent. The rector is Prof. Dr. Mit’hat Mema.

Activity overview

The Aleksandër Moisiu University of Durrës is a public higher education institution which was founded by decision number 801 of the Council of Ministers of the Republic of Albania “For the opening of the Aleksandër Moisiu University of Durrës” on December 20, 2005. The university was first opened to students in the academic year 2006-2007, when approximately 1000 students from all over the country took up their studies. Today, in the fifth year of its existence, the University has around 5500 students. The main activity is teaching and research, but also projects and other extra-curricular activities. The university has been operating since its foundation according to the principles of the Bologna Process: program studies are organized in three cycles (bachelor's, master's and doctoral studies), and are expressed in the ECTS system. Currently the university has 7 main bodies of which 6 are faculties and one is a branch in the city of Peshkopi, capital of Dibër District and Dibër County in northeastern Albania.

Specializations, Areas & Projects

The university offers degree programs in each of its six main divisions: Faculty of Business, Faculty of Applied Integrated Studies, Faculty of Political and Legal Studies, Faculty of Education, Faculty of Professional Studies, Faculty of Information and Technology. The Faculty of Business offers program studies at three levels (bachelor's, master's and doctoral) in various disciplines such as economics, marketing, tourism management, finance and banking. The Faculty of Applied Integrated Studies also offers a focus in economics, but unlike the other divisions, it operates according to the German model of berufsakademie, whereby students work simultaneously in the sectors that correspond with their program studies. The Faculty of Applied Integrated Studies is focused on banking and finance, tourism management, and small-to-medium enterprise management.

Strategic vision

Aleksandër Moisiu University is a regional university situated in Durrës. The area of Durrës is on the coast of the Adriatic sea, 20 miles from Tirana (the capital city of Albania), and is the second most important economic area in the country. The area of Durrës is known as one of the most important tourism areas in Albania because of its geographical location on the coast, but also as one of the most ancient cities in Albania, founded around 627 BC. From this point of view Aleksandër Moisiu University is focused on developing program studies and activities that can fit with the economic life of the city like tourism, transport, and economics, in order to develop the necessary human resources for the future labor market of the area.
